The California Lead Law and How it Affects You

Information about the California No Lead Law

In 2006, California passed the AB1953 Lead Law. This law will have a major impact on distributors of plumbing supplies, plumbers, builders, manufacturers, and any other type of business that plays in role in the delivery of water to homes or businesses where that water will be used for human consumption. The law takes effect on January 1, 2010, and the State of California is offering no grace period for compliance with the law.

Information supplied by the State of California regarding the AB1953 Lead Law can be viewed here. What this information tells us is how different industries and businesses will be affected by the law, and what is required of those businesses and industries in regards to the California lead law.

While many think that this law only applies to new buildings where water is delivered for consumption by humans, this isn’t the case. This law also applies to renovations of existing buildings where plumbing fittings and fixtures are changed. Those fittings and fixtures must be lead free under the terms of the law.

The law states that you cannot use any pipe, pipe or plumbing fitting, plumbing fixture, solder, or flux that is not lead free in the installation or repair of any public water system or any plumbing in a facility providing water for human consumption. You also cannot sell solder or flux that is not lead free.

There are many other stipulations to this law, and any person or business who thinks that they may be affected by this new law is encouraged to read the law fully, as well as all of the stipulations of the law to ensure that they are complying. If you do not comply with the AB1953 Lead Law, you face fines up to $6000 daily, and you may be subject to civil lawsuits as well.

You can comply with this law by the time that the law goes into effect by selecting lead free brass fittings that work with different types of existing pipes used for the delivery of water. ProBite™ makes complying with the law easy and affordable with their AB1953 compliant lead free brass plumbing fittings.

These fittings can be used on existing copper, CPVC, and PEX pipes, and the fittings are installed without glue or solder – they simply push onto the pipe for the connection. The fittings are superior in everyway, and the connection is secure. When you use ProBite™ plumbing products, you won’t have to worry about corrosion or failure of the fittings, as they are designed and constructed with the highest level of quality.
